Neon Ring　ネオン・リング

The neon sign of the weathered shopping mall shines brightly, the letter "O" glaringly luminous. Despite there being nothing here that truly sparks joy in my heart, I find myself drawn to it, like insects to light. It reminds me of my childhood, lying in bed before sleep, gazing at the fluorescent light. Even when turned off, its afterimage lingered, a perfect circle of light. I used to wonder if I would truly wake up again after falling asleep. Would a ring of light shine above my head too? These thoughts kept me awake for many nights.

If heaven or the afterlife were like this shopping mall, I wouldn't be inclined to go, no matter how it's advertised. It would simply be too dull.

風化したショッピングモールの看板のネオン管、「O」の文字がやけに眩しく光る。
ここには何一つ私の心をときめかせるものはないのに、　
光に吸い寄せられる虫のように、それに惹きつけられる。
子供の頃、寝る前に眺めた蛍光管を思い出す。　
消えてもなお残像を光らせる、まあるい輪。
寝った後、本当に再び目を覚ませるだろうか。
ちゃんと私の頭上にもリングが輝くだろうか。　
そんなことを考え、長い夜を過ごした。　

もし天国やあの世と言われる場所が、こんなショッピングモールなら退屈で行く気にはなれない。どんな広告をうたれても。
